LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) — School officials say a Long Beach middle school was locked down when an unauthorized person was reported on or near campus.

A Long Beach School District spokesman says safety procedures were followed and the lockdown at Hubert H. Bancroft Middle School started around 11:30 a.m. Monday. A thorough search was conducted and no unauthorized person was found.

School officials say the lockdown continued while police checked neighborhoods nearby. It finally ended around 2 p.m.

The spokesman didn't know if the unauthorized person had a weapon, but he added that there was enough concern expressed by witnesses for officials to lock the school down.

Bancroft has nearly 1,000 students in grades six through eight.
