SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Military officials say a Northern California sailor assigned to a naval special warfare unit has died in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense says Petty Officer 1st Class Kevin Ebbert, from Arcata, died Saturday in the country's Uruzgan province. The region is a mountainous area in the center of the country.

The Department of Defense says at the time of his death the 32-year-old Ebbert was supporting what it termed "stability operations."

Ebbert was assigned to an East Coast-based special warfare unit, a Navy unit that includes personnel commonly known as SEALs.

A DOD spokesman was not available for additional comment late Monday, but the unit's website says it deploys its personnel for "extreme-environment" operations at sea or in mountainous areas.
