LOS ANGELES (AP) — A San Fernando Valley doctor has pleaded not guilty to illegally prescribing potent painkillers, anti-anxiety and insomnia drugs.
The Los Angeles Daily News (http://bit.ly/GzQ9er ) says Dr. Yahya Hedvat of Encino entered his plea Tuesday to 11 felony counts of unlawfully prescribing a controlled substance.
Prosecutors claim he prescribed hydrocodone, clonazepam and other powerful narcotics to patients without conducting proper examinations.
The 68-year-old physician was released from jail Aug. 16 after posting $80,000 bail.
Hedvat could face more than 7 1/2 years in jail if convicted.
He could also be subject to disciplinary action by the California Medical Board.
