San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - The San Diego Padres made the signing of Joaquin Benoit official on Saturday by announcing that the veteran reliever agreed to a two-year contract.

The deal, which CBS Sports had previously reported will pay the right-hander $15.5 million, includes a vesting option for 2016.

Benoit, 36, stepped into the closer's role for the Detroit Tigers last season, converting 24-of-26 save opportunities. He made 66 appearances overall and finished with a 2.01 earned run average.

"Joaquin has proven to be one of the top late-game relievers in baseball," said San Diego executive vice president and general manager Josh Byrnes. "We are excited to add him to our staff."

For his career, Benoit has compiled a 44-35 record with a 4.11 ERA in 541 games for Texas, Tampa Bay and Detroit.

The Padres designated pitcher Adys Portillo for assignment to make room for Benoit on the 40-man roster.
