DOWNEY, Calif. (AP) -- The California Highway Patrol says a person walking in lanes has been fatally struck by a vehicle on Interstate 5 in Downey south of Los Angeles.
Officer Jennifer Cassidy says only one lane of the freeway is open early Thursday.
All lanes were shut down for a time after the body was found in lanes near the Rio Hondo River around 4:15 a.m.
Investigators don't know why the pedestrian was on the freeway.
The incident has caused a massive backup of trucks and cars headed north to Los Angeles and the San Joaquin Valley.
