SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — San Bernardino police say a former renowned high school basketball coach who was shot several times at a city park lied to them about the incident and hindered their investigation.

Police Lt. Paul Williams tells the Riverside Press-Enterprise that Steve Johnson, who still teaches physical education at Eisenhower High in Rialto, failed to mention a second victim and witness who was with him.

Police say they learned from Johnson's cell phone that there was a 19-year-old man sitting and drinking with him at the park who he had not mentioned and who was pistol-whipped by the robbers that shot Johnson four times. Williams says the teen provided several details that demonstrated he was at the scene.

Johnson did not return several messages left seeking comment from the newspaper.
