LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man is dead and his brother is suspected by police after a shooting during a family birthday celebration in South Los Angeles.

Los Angeles police Lt. Jeff Nolte says 48-year-old Derrick Hill was fatally shot by his brother Louis Hill Saturday shortly before 9 p.m. on the 800 block of E. 78th Street.

Nolte says Hill hasn't been arrested. He says police are interviewing Hill and don't know if the shooting was accidental.

Mother Doris Hill says the family was celebrating her granddaughter's ninth birthday with cake and ice cream when Louis ran in and said he'd been jumped on the corner.

His big brother Derrick went out to see what happened and the family next heard a gunshot. She says someone else shot Derrick once in the head.
