VENTURA, Calif. (AP) — Federal budget cuts mean popular public athletic events are being canceled at Naval Base Ventura County.

The Ventura County Star reports Wednesday that the Mud Run, Admiral's Cup Triathalon and Point Mugu Surf Contest are among the partially-funded special events that are being discontinued.

Any registration fees will be refunded over the next four to six weeks.

The May 18 Mud Run was expected to attract 1,000 participants and the Point Mugu surf contest usually draws about 8,000 spectators for the late summer event.

Similar events are being canceled at many bases. Cutbacks will also reduce gym and pool hours at the base.

It's unclear if the Navy's popular Blue Angels flight squadron will perform their aerial show at Point Mugu in the fall.
