Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - The Cincinnati Reds officially placed starting pitcher Homer Bailey on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a flexor mass strain in his right elbow.

Bailey was scheduled to start Saturday's game against the Colorado Rockies. The Reds selected the contract of pitcher Dylan Axelrod from Triple-A Louisville to take his place.

The 28-year-old Bailey felt pain while throwing on Tuesday, and received an MRI on Wednesday that revealed the strain.

He is 9-5 with a 3.71 earned run average in 23 starts this season.

Axelrod will be making his Cincinnati debut on Saturday. He was acquired by the Reds in a trade with the Chicago White Sox on July 17 and has since gone 2-1 with a 3.06 ERA with Louisville.

In three seasons with the White Sox, Axelrod appeared in 48 games -- including 30 starts -- and posted a record of 7-13 with an ERA of 5.36.

To make room on the 40-man roster, Cincinnati transferred first baseman Joey Votto from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL.

Votto was originally placed on the DL, retroactive to July 6, with a distal left quadriceps strain. He was also out from May 16-June 9 with the same injury.

Votto is hitting .255 with six homers and 23 RBI in 62 games this season.
