RENO, Nev. (AP) — The lead negotiator for the union representing Reno-area transit bus system employees reported progress in contract talks ahead of a deadline for expiration of the current two-year agreement.

Teamsters Local 533 President Gary Watson said union employees with the Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County to vote Sunday on a strike authorization plan.

But Watson says a contract extension is possible and an agreement could be reached with MV Transportation, the Texas-based contractor managing the system ahead of the midnight Monday deadline.

Watson says authorization to strike from the rank-and-file would empower union leaders to call a work stoppage any time after Tuesday.

Local 533 has represented RTC bus system and RTC Access paratransit drivers and support personnel for 25 years.
