INCLINE VILLAGE, Nev. (AP) — A Lake Tahoe couple filed a police report saying they received numerous death threats and harassing messages after reporting problems with a black bear that was captured and euthanized by Nevada wildlife officials.

Richard and Adrienne Evans of Incline Village filed the report with the Washoe County Sheriff's Office on Thursday, the same day the bear was killed.

The couple says phone threats started coming Wednesday night to their home and Richard Evans' construction office after wildlife officials installed a trap outside their home.

The two say the bear had attempted to break into Adrienne Evans' car twice in recent weeks and succeeded Tuesday night, causing extensive damage to its interior.

She denied having food inside as alleged by critics.

Nevada Department of Wildlife spokesman Chris Healy says the 263-pound black bear was euthanized because it posed a threat to public safety. He says the animal was captured and released back into the wild earlier this year.

Ann Bryant of the Bear League says members of her citizens group are urged not to break any laws, but "emotions are going to be high as long" as bears are being killed.

I am liberal and love the bears who cohabit this beautiful area with us. However, the only person who did anything wrong is the woman who fed the (now euthanized) bear, ignoring clear advice about how to avoid creating nuisance bears; thus endangering the bear, herself, her neighbors and their property. The death threats and harassment; as well as the statement by Ann Bryant of the Bear League are reprehensible. In the first half of her statement, Ms. Bryant denies encouraging supporters to engage in improper behavior, and in the second half, disingenuously gives tacit approval for the same. Such words may be O.K. in the privacy of your own home, but are inappropriate for public utterance from a community leader of any kind. There is also, of course, as mentioned in some of the previous comments, the hypocrisy of of a group which is dedicated to non-violence toward anyone, human or animal, being connected in any way to threatening to kill anyone (even if only tacit approval). In the end, this sort of tactic is counterproductive, because it gives your opponents legitimate criticisms; and discourages many who could have been strong supporters for your cause. Bears are wild creatures, and they are incredibly strong. If a bear has repeatedly caused problems by breaking into vehicles or homes, what is the home or vehicle owner (who had no part in reinforcing this bear's problem behavior) supposed to do? Invite the bear into the kitchen, offer him dinner, then say "By the way, help yourself to my arm for dessert?" Anyone who really cares about the welfare of these bears should be educating the public about how to avoid doing things that may put the bear at risk for being euthanized, not threatening to kill others.

Paladin - 12/23/2013 11:12 AM "Bear activists, horse activists, ELF (earth liberation front), ALF (animal liberation front); All these loony, left wing extremists are the same. All of them are ready and willing to resort to committing illegal acts." The real terrorists are the NDoW and the Hunters that actually murder innocent animals, they are sociopaths killers in a political environment, being protected for a right to kill, from higher up corrupt sociopaths killers. There is no way that the 2.3 % of hunters are legitimately making the rules.

love reading all the knee-jerk hate stuff, especially when any responsible environmental activist would deny this is appropriate. It's easy to marginalize the opposition if U are a whacko yerself. Besides, at UC the ALF or ELF was known to "crane-sit" or arson the wrong building! &&I think NDOW should cross off a bear from their hunt "quota' every time one is euthanized. Fair, because this reflects upon the incroachment issue.

Bear activists, horse activists, ELF (earth liberation front), ALF (animal liberation front); All these loony, left wing extremists are the same. All of them are ready and willing to resort to committing illegal acts. They are nothing more than domestic terrorists. Many are even labeled as such by the feds and on watch lists, they should be.

But of course the ACTIVISTS are peaceful and would never hurt anyone. As long as you support their AGENDA! Just like other special interest groups that want to force their agendas down your throat.
