RENO, Nev. (KRNV & - Reno Fire Fighters can show up to work with up to a .08 percent blood alcohol level without facing punishment, this according to a new report from the Reno Gazette Journal.

The RGJ report continues to says it is also okay for Fire Fighters to have certain levels of illegal drugs in their system while working without facing discipline; Drugs that include marijuana and cocaine.  This is according to the Fire Fighter contract with the city and the policy cannot be changed unless it goes through the collective bargaining process.

The RGJ report by Anjeanette Damon continues to say every other City of Reno employee falls under the city's general drug and alcohol policy that dictates a clear prohibition on drug and alcohol use, "While on duty, whether on or off city property, employees are prohibited from using, being under the influence of, possessing, manufacturing, distributing, dispensing, ingesting and/or inhaling alcohol or illegal drugs."

You want to know what is more frightening than the fact a Reno firefighter can be running code in a tax funded tank under a host of illegal substances that are COMPLETELY illegal? He can injure or kill anyone and the victim's maximum damages top out at $100k because he is protected by sovereign immunity because he is a government employee and acting within policy. Neither the fire fighter or the City can be held liable for any more than $100k per victim, regardless of how serious the damages... Please contact your council members and mayoral candidates and insist this nonsense be put to a stop.

I am a local Firefighter Paramedic in a town south of reno in Nevada! As all of us fellow Firefighters watch Reno Fire Department continuously embarrass other departments in scandal and just plain stupidity I want to make everyone understand that not any other department is even close to being the same, in every aspect!! Everyone I know from other departments and the fireman I work with here are all upstanding, honest, hardworking professionals. All of our contracts except for Reno obviously, follow the DOT and State set regulations with a 0 tolerance to all Illegal and prescribed drugs and our alcohol tolerance is not to be above .04%! We are also one of only 2 department to be random drug tested every month. I know its hard not to lump us all into one basket but if you all can, please try to understand that Reno Fire seems they are entitled to something special, something ridiculously special! Most all the surrounding departments function extremely well with 3 man engines, infact, with many fire saves whereas Reno, even with 4 man engines seem to let everything burn to the ground! Its sad that they are fighting so hard for 4 man engines that the city is willing to sacrifice jobs in other city positions before laying off fireman. We all have to share the economic hardship and if that means laying off fireman thats what it means!! You all have every right to be upset with the Reno Fire Department and trust me, all of us surrounding departments are just as upset as you, even more so though we are embarrassed to even see Fireman of any department putting the city of reno and its public through what they have been doing to you all for years!! To Reno Firefighters - GET OVER IT!! You are nothing special! You are whiners!! You are a total embarrassment to everyone that calls themselves a Fireman. I have worked so hard to be the professional that I am today, I am proud of what everything that I do when I come to work, I am proud to NOT be a Reno Firefighter!

Freedomrings: I've always wondered how law enforcement justifies belonging to the big OC controlled unions like SEIU. I can understand locally organized protective associations but to connect to a group with such a long history of corruption and OC ties is beyond me. This will never get better for the public until the firefighter's union and their illegal contract is broken. But that's not likely to happen when your local counsel and commission is all interwoven into the system. One hand greasing the other, or whatever the saying is. Maybe a judge with some cajones and a little impartiality will be able to intervene and stop this nonsense.

Just more proof why we need to trash these filthy scum sucking unions. How can law enforcement even belong to a union knowing it's controlled by organized crime ( mafia ).

How can a union contract override state and federal drug laws?! This is crazy. A judge should be looking at and invalidating this union contract. What does state statute say about a firefighter's BAC while on duty? I know statute addresses cops and allows almost no percentage. The law even addresses CCW holders as not able to carry their firearms in under the influence of alcohol or drugs. But a fireman can drive a 5 ton deadly weapon through the streets of Reno, lights and sirens wailing while he is .079 % BAC. THAT IS NUTS!!!

Hey, all the personnel attacks against fire fighters and first responders needs to stop. I'm sure they aren't throwing "cocaine parties" at the firehouse idiot. It's the upper level idiots we voted in and the upper level union idiots that are making these decisions.

I am a retired firefighter and wonder where the pride of the Reno firefighter has gone. Why would any fire department need this issue in their union contact? After all the union contact was approve by the Reno City Counsel. It is a sad day for the fire service as a whole.

So the fire truck driver can be .08, stoned, with coke residue all over his face and go out on emergency calls? Please oh please mr fireman hit me while I'm driving. I want to owm the city hall building so I can kick all those dumba$$es out! Could this policy also be in effect in Montana? That would explain the firey head-on crash the took the lives of a family of 5 and the fire chief

How does a union contract void the DUI laws?? And what does OSHA say about the drug and alcohol parties they through at the fire stations? Do the tax payers have to pay for their supply of cocaine and alcohol?
