Carson City, NV (KRNV & MyNews4.com) -- Northern Nevada residents joined forces to speak out about out a proposed rate increase by NV Energy.

Residents gathered at the public comment hearing in Carson City at the Public Utilities Commission Office at 1150 East Williams St tonight, September 4, 2013.

NV Energy filed a general rate case with the PUC on June 3, 2013. NV Energy Officials say it is required to do so at least once every 3 years, according to the law.

If approved, the filing will decrease commercial customer bills by 2.05%. While residential customers will see a 2.4% increase, something many northern Nevadans say isn't fair.

Fred Voltz a Carson City resident says the PUC doesn't consider residents to be important in the decision making process and Voltz added that, "That's not the way you treat people who are stuck with a monopoly service provider."

Mary Simmons, the Vice President of External Affairs for NV Energy, says the increase for residential customers is due to a shift in the cost of services.

Simmons says, Ultimately this rate case is seeking a $4.7 million reduction in the electric revenue requirement, "It is a request for an overall decrease, so that was kind of lost in the entire thing."

If approved as filed, residential electric customers will see a $2.12 increase on their bill. While residential gas customers will see a $2.02 increase. The electric service charge would also increase by $5.75 from $9.25 per month to $15.00 per month.

This is the company that wants us to conserve energy, and green our homes so we use less energy. They had record profits in the last 6 months and now everyone has a smart meter that diminishes the labor needed to read them. Natural gas is going down in cost and if we are using less energy they should not have to buy more of it. When do these greedy clowns get enough??????

I feel that this increase is to bring the rates up to what the new company will charge. There is no reason to charge $10.00 a month for a meter when they were forced on us. Iv NVEnergy only made #3 million in this last year is their fault. Cut some of the top positions, their raises, bonuses and stock options, there would be money enough for the end line. Why should the President make almot a million with a million or close to it in bonus. No one is worth that amount of money. Cut the fat our of the top offices. They probably have a VP for restrooms.
