RANCHO PALOS VERDES, Calif. (AP) — Swimmers and divers have been searching a small, rocky ocean cove in Southern California for a 19-year-old man who disappeared while swimming with friends.

A Los Angeles County sheriff's statement says for three hours county fire and U.S. Coast Guard rescuers searched Abalone Cove in Rancho Palos Verdes for the man who went missing while swimming at about 3 p.m. Wednesday. Sheriff's divers then took over and are continuing the search.

Friends of the missing man tell City News Service they were jumping into the choppy water when the man started yelling for help. They helped him get to a rock but he was swept by a wave.

Dangerous waves and riptides in the area have brought rescuers to the spot in Shoreline Park for several days in a row.
