SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Prosecutors say a 30-year-old San Francisco man faces murder charges in the death of a college student who was apparently shot randomly in the back of the head while exiting a light-rail car.
District Attorney George Gascon said Friday that Nikhom Thephakaysone went "out hunting" when he gunned down 20-year-old Justin Valdez near San Francisco State University on Monday.
Police Chief Greg Suhr says the shooting appears to have been unprovoked.
In addition to murder, Thephakaysone faces multiple other felony charges including assault with a semi-automatic handgun for an unrelated assault, and illegally possessing an assault weapon. Police seized two assault rifles, combat knives and razors at his home.
Thephakaysone was also carrying $20,000 in cash.
He is scheduled to be arraigned on Oct. 2.
