SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Each month so far in 2014 has brought news of another arrest or conviction of a Democratic California state senator.

Wednesday's arrest of Sen. Leland Yee on federal corruption charges makes him the third Democratic senator to face charges.

The arrests of Yee and Sen. Ron Calderon, as well as the conviction of Sen. Rod Wright on voter fraud and perjury, have dampened the spirits of Democrats.

They hold large majorities in the Assembly and Senate and should be sailing into this election year, but now some Republicans are seeking to capitalize on the alleged dirty dealings.

Others point to the arrests as signs of a corrupt institution that needs reform.

Secretary of State candidate Derek Cressman says lawmakers constantly begging for campaign cash has a "corrosive effect on a person's soul."
