SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — A Santa Clara County judge is exploring whether to release a notorious serial rapist to a Southern California residence over the objections of the Los Angeles County district attorney and others.
Authorities announced Friday that a landlord in a sparsely populated area east of Palmdale has agreed to rent a home to Christopher Evans Hubbart when he is released from the mental hospital he has be confined to since 1996. Hubbart admitted to raping 38 women between 1971 and 1982.
Judge Gilbert Brown set a hearing date for May 21 to review public comment on the proposal. Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey said she will fight Hubbart's Southern California relocation.
Another Los Angeles County landlord earlier withdrew an offer to rent to Hubbart.
