ELK GROVE, Calif. (AP) — Authorities have issued California's first-ever Silver Alert for an 82-year-old Sacramento-area man reported missing Monday afternoon.

The Sacramento Bee reports Robert Grappi left his Elk Grove home after arguing with his wife and was believed to be driving to his son's house in Nevada County.

Elk Grove Police say Grappi relies on regular medication and may have dementia. He was driving a 1998 Toyota RAV4 with California license plate ATSAOK2.

A Silver Alert was issued in Sacramento, Placer and Nevada counties.

Under the new Silver Alert program, which took effect Tuesday, the California Highway Patrol asks news media, law enforcement and the public for help in locating elderly individuals believed to be at risk.

Unlike Amber Alerts, the system used to locate missing children, Silver Alerts do not show up on electronic highway signs.
