Skateboarding icon Shogo Kubo has died while paddle boarding in Honolulu, Hawaii.

The sports star was pulled to shore after other beach goers spotted the 54-year-old struggling in the water, but emergency personnel failed to revive him and he was pronounced dead at the scene on Tuesday.

A cause of death has yet to be determined, but police tell there was nothing suspicious about his passing.

Kubo rose to fame as an original member of the Zephyr surf shop's legendary Z-Boys skateboarding team in 1975, and his crew was immortalized in the 2001 documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys.

He was inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame in 2012.
