SAN DIEGO (AP) — A man arrested on suspicion of killing three people in a San Diego parking lot on Christmas Eve has been ordered to stand trial for murder.
U-T San Diego reports a judge determined Wednesday that there is enough evidence tying 29-year-old Carlo Gallopa Mercado to the killings at Mission Valley shopping center.
Mercado was arrested in June and booked on suspicion of killing Salvadore Belvedere and Ilona Flint, both 22, in the early hours of Dec. 24. Belvedere's 24-year-old brother Gianni, who was Flint's fiance, disappeared around the same time.
He was found dead in a car trunk about 3½ weeks later.
Prosecutors say Mercado's DNA was discovered on items near Gianni Belvedere's body.
An attorney for Mercado said his client denies any involvement in the killings.
