FRESNO, Calif. (AP) — A Fresno man who told detectives he strangled his 78-year-old grandmother is being sent to a state mental hospital.

The Fresno Bee reports that a Superior Court judge ordered 22-year-old Travis Fendley committed for psychiatric care on Thursday.

Relatives say Fendley has been diagnosed as schizophrenic and three doctors who evaluated him concluded he is not competent to stand trial.

After allegedly killing his grandmother three months ago, Fendley walked to his mother's home and stole her car, Fresno police say. He was found in Merced County later that day after he crashed the vehicle.

Police say Fendley also had threatened other family members.
