SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A San Francisco tax lawyer was sentenced to a year in prison Wednesday because he failed to file his income tax returns.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of California said in a statement Wednesday that 58-year-old James Kleier had not reported income he earned during four separate years.

Authorities said that as an associate at Reed Smith LLP, Kleier earned salaries ranging from $200,000 to more than $600,000 from 2008 to 2010.

Kleier was ordered to pay more than $650,000 in past-due taxes for the years 2003, 2008, 2009, and 2010.

He was charged with three counts of failure to file income tax returns and admitted to not filing for several years. He pleaded guilty to one count and has been ordered to surrender himself in September.
