LAS VEGAS (AP) — Authorities say a teenage former student was arrested at a Las Vegas high school campus after police found an unloaded assault weapon in his vehicle.
Clark County School District Police Capt. Ken Young says tips from students and parents prompted campus police to question 18-year-old Jake Howell on Friday at Northwest Career and Technical Academy.
Young says Howell had ammunition for the SKS assault rifle, but made no threats and no disturbance.
Young says Howell faces a misdemeanor charge of possessing a dangerous weapon on school property.
In the wake of a deadly school shooting last week in Newtown, Conn., Young says Clark County police checked several hundred rumors about threats in the nation's fifth-largest school district.
Police also stepped up their presence Friday at area high school campuses.
