RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) - The following are updates from the final Washoe Fire press conference that was help at Depoali Middle School tonight.
The cause of the fire has been determined. An elderly man came forward and admitted that he improperly discarded fireplace ashes. The case has now been turned over to the District Attorney's office to determine if charges will be filed. Police say the man is extremely remorseful.
The fire is 65% contained and the final acreage count is 3,177 acres burned. There was one fatality yesterday but it will be unclear if the death was caused by the fire until the autopsy report comes back.
Crews will be out all night again. NV Energy says there are still 100 people without power. The cost of this fire could run into the millions. So far it has cost 690,000 however, an assistant grant should cover about 75% of the cost.
395 should be opened between 10 p.m. and midnight tonight. Residential areas affected by the fire will be restricted by police and the national guard. They ask that no one attempt to drive through the area.
