CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — A Las Vegas high school history instructor has been named Nevada's 2014 Michael Landsberry Teacher of the Year.

State superintendent Dale Erquiaga announced Wednesday that Jeffrey Hinton had taken the top honor.

Hinton has taught at Northwest Career and Technical Academy since 2008. He teaches U.S. history, world history and the history of rock and roll, in addition to chairing the school's social studies department.

Erquiaga says Hinton has a passion for teaching that motivates his student to become lifelong learners.

Hinton is a graduate of the College of Southern Nevada and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

The teacher of the year award was recently renamed in honor of Michael Landsberry, a math teacher who died in October while trying to stop a shooter at Sparks Middle School.
