LOS ANGELES (AP) — A funeral is being held in downtown Los Angeles for a veteran police motorcycle officer who died after being struck by a motorist allegedly under the influence of cocaine.

Hundreds of fellow law enforcement officers turned out Tuesday at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels to mourn 51-year-old Officer Chris Cortijo (kor-TEE'-oh), who spent 26 years in the Los Angeles Police Department.

In a eulogy, Mayor Eric Garcetti told the gathering that Cortijo was twice named officer of the year and in his career made 3,000 DUI arrests.

It's the second funeral in little more than a month for the LAPD. In March, 40-year-old Officer Nicholas Choung Lee was killed in a collision between his patrol car and a truck in Beverly Hills.
