RENO, Nev. (KRNV & MyNews4.com) - On Monday October 21st a 12 year-old brought a gun to Sparks Middle School, he shot three and then himself. There are still many unanswered questions about the incident in an interview with the parents we tried to answer some of them.

Was Sparks Middle School Shooter a Victim of Bullying? And did that play a role in the tragedy? That's the question haunting our entire community two weeks after the shooting. And it’s a question that haunts Jose's parents who sat down with us for an interview.

Jose Reyes Mandujano told us his son was depressed and it may have stemmed from some teasing his son endured at school because of a speech impediment.

“He mentioned strong words. One of the words was they were telling him he was gay. For a 12 year old kid those words are really strong and painful.” Jose senior told News 4.

But Jose never complained or reported the teasing to his teachers as far as we know. His family says they did their best to keep an open line of communication with their son.

If there were strong warning signs, the dad says they didn’t see them. “We always ask him how is it going at school. New teachers, new friends, and he was saying everything is fine.”

COMANCHE, WOW, your insight is, IMHO, SPOT ON. Well thought and well written. It's refreshing to see someone so well balanced and grounded in truth. It's definitely up to us parents to instill "mental (and) individual resiliency" in our children towards their "tormentors". Unfortunately, free will and choice, in this case, is a double edged sword. We must endure the free choices of those around us including people who bully, torment, and cause all kinds of heartache. Instilling mental toughness in our kids will arm them against this type of treatment, which we all have endured no matter how insignificant. Again, well put. Thank you.

Anti-bullying campaigns, celebrity pronouncements, media outrage, pontificating politicians, and even public laws, will not prevent or mitigate bullying. The only true defense against bullying is individual resiliency and recognition that words, by themselves, can never truly hurt us. We choose our own responses to emotional terrorism. Some people however, are never taught or never learn this fundamental lesson and become irrationally distressed when someone says they have ugly hair, that they talk funny, are gay, or when they are “dissed” by the TSA. Children who lack mental resiliency and who have no recognition of their own power, actually give control over their minds, words and actions, to their tormentor.

Free choice of will is an important concept for people, especially children. Individual decisions have consequences, and no cultural sanction, public law, or celebrity endorsement, can protect us from them. Deciding to use physical force against oneself or others in response to non-kinetic, verbal, or written, insults and attacks, either by jumping from a silo, or by shooting one’s oppressors, only hurts the bullying victim and their loved ones, and doesn’t show “them” anything. Innocents are sometimes in the crossfire and the intended targets; Bullies, TSA, Society? Escape unharmed. Self-destructive behavior only serves as a demonstration of the bully’s power over the minds of their self-willed victims.

Current anti-bullying strategies are well intentioned but ineffective. Thinking that we can make laws, arrest offenders, and imprison bad actors is wrong-headed and ignores the fact that the bullies didn’t do anything besides acting crude, boorish, and insensitive toward a fellow human; behavior that many of us have had and overcame at some point in our lives, particularly during adolescence. The only effective strategy is to teach children that regardless of what someone says or writes about them, or of the perceived slight directed toward them, as long as the actions of others are non-kinetic, and don’t physically harm them, that they are the commanders of their own fates and masters of their eternal souls when it comes to how they CHOOSE to think and react. Rest in peace Mike Landsberry. Rest in peace Jose Reyes. There is no limit to the sadness and cruelty possible in this world. The only offset is that the world was blessed with the lights of your presence while you were in it. We will mourn your passing as we celebrate your lives. “Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.” - Proverbs 12:19
