EUREKA, Calif. (AP) — The Humboldt County economy is getting a boost from an upcoming sci-fi action movie starring Will Smith and his 13-year-old son Jaden.

The Times-Standard of Eureka reports that Sony Pictures spent an estimated $5 million in the rural Northern California county during the scouting, preparation and shooting of "After Earth" earlier this year.

The movie is directed by M. Night Shyamalan and features Will and Jaden Smith as an estranged father and son whose spaceship crash-lands on a post-apocalyptic planet Earth. It's expected to be released in the summer of 2013.

County film commissioner Cassandra Hesseltine says the $5 million could generate up to three times that amount in indirect spending.
