LAS VEGAS (AP) — A Clark County deputy public defender is announcing his candidacy for the Nevada Assembly.

Steve Yeager has the backing of the Assembly Democratic caucus in his race for the District 9 seat currently held by Assemblyman Andrew Martin.

Martin is considering a run for state controller. On the eve of last year's election a judge ruled he lived outside his district, but he was allowed to take his seat under the state constitution that gives the Assembly and Senate sole authority to determine the qualifications of members.

Yeager joined the public defender's office in 2009 and was a lobbyist for the office during the 2013 legislative session.

If elected Yeager says his focus will be on improving the economy, education and helping small businesses.
