Chicken costumes banned at Nevada polling places

RENO, Nev. (AP) -- Nevada voters will not be able to go to the polls wearing a chicken costume this year.

State election officials have added chicken suits to the list of banned items after Republican Senate candidate Sue Lowden suggested bartering with doctors for medical care like when "our
grandparents would bring a chicken to the doctor."

Democrats set up a website, "Chickens for Checkups," and have dispatched volunteers in chicken suits to Lowden's campaign events.

Washoe County Registrar of Voters Dan Burk says wearing a chicken suit at the polls would be an "inappropriate and obvious" advocacy message against Lowden.

Lowden is vying in a 12-way primary race that will decide Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's Republican opponent.

Early voting began Saturday in the June 8 primary.
