Officials say a homebuilt "tandem" plane crashed Thursday afternoon, killing both people on board, about one mile northeast of the airport in Truckee.

The single-engine RV8 crashed at about 2:10 p.m., near the Truckee Tahoe Airport, according to FAA Spokesman Ian Gregor.

An employee with a emergency response unity said the plane crashed in rough terrain in the Martis Valley.

Officials are not releasing the names of the dead.

The plane is registered to Rotge Raymond of Santa Rosa, California, according to FAA records. The fixed-wing aircraft's manufacturer was Berhard D/Bernhard M, FAA records said.
