NHP, CHP discuss DUI check points, extra holiday patrols and “move over” law

The 4th of July weekend is not only one of the busiest times of the year on our nation's highways, it is also the deadliest.

The Insurance Institute of America points to heavy traffic, people driving longer distances and alcohol for the deadly designation.

Both the Nevada and California Highway Patrol will have sobriety checkpoints throughout the weekend.

"We've got two check sites planned here in northern Nevada," Allen said Friday. "Hopefully getting the word out ahead of time lets folks know that we are proactive looking for those impaired drivers, in addition to those check sites we are going to have saturation patrols throughout the area as well."

A check point will be set up in Fallon on Saturday, and near Incline Village on Sunday.

Authorities will also be enforcing the "move over" law-a law that requires motorists to practice caution while passing a vehicle that has been pulled over to the side of the road.

"You're required to change lanes if you're in the adjacent lane," CHP Officer Tony Prisco said. "If safe and practical and legal to do so. If not...if the lane's occupied and unsafe...then you're required to slow down and pass at a safe speed."

The CHP has lost five officers since May 7, three of whom were killed when they were hit by another car during a traffic stop.
