Two bodies found in S.W. Reno house that burned after reported explosion

Page Last Updated: Tuesday July 20, 2010 7:46pm PDT

Investigators have found two bodies in the burned-out rubble of a home in an exclusive southwest Reno neighborhood. They have been unable to identify the victims who died in the blaze, which began shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Deputies with the Washoe County Sheriff's Office had attempted to serve an eviction at the home, which was under foreclosure, on Tuesday at about 10:40 a.m. They said they knocked and identified themselves, then heard what sounded like gunfire or an explosion and took cover.

Then they realized the house was on fire.

Deputies called for backup from the Reno Fire Department, SWAT Team, Consolidated Bomb Squad and Hostage Negotiation Team. Firefighters spent hours trying to douse the flames which continually flared, subsided and flared again for hours.

South McCarran Boulevard was closed for several hours while firefighters battled the flames. Thirty-seven homes nearby were evacuated, but firefighters managed to keep the fire confined to the home where it began in the 2500 block of Lakeridge Shores. Neighbors said the middle-aged man who lived at the home-- sometimes with his elderly mother-- told them the home was under foreclosure, but that he was fighting to save it.

"He did tell me it was in foreclosure, but he was managing to keep above water," said Vicki Colodny, who lived next door. She said she was going to the gym Tuesday morning when she saw the deputies approaching the house.

Investigators planned to remain at the scene Tuesday evening, then resume their search for evidence and clues at first light on Wednesday morning. A news conference is scheduled for 9 a.m. at the Reno Police Department on Wednesday. Stay with News 4 for continuing coverage of this fatal fire and the follow-up investigation.

How very sad . This is the sign of the times who knows if it was the home owner at the end of his rope or an accident I am sure they will let us know ...as someone who allmost lost there house to taxes ..yes property taxes this year had it not been for a wonderful father bailing me out I understand peoples utter desperation at losing everything . If only this wonderful country of ours would do something . I guess Ill hold my breath...I really dont know what to think and feel any more about everything ,everything I grew up believing in has been shown to me as an utter lie and I dont know what to believe in any more....

My comment back to Tracy: Yes, how very sad for this man & his elderly mother. IF ONLY OUR GOVERNMENT WOULD STOP BAILING OUT OTHER COUNTRIES & CARE FOR IT'S OWN CITIZEN'S IN TIME OF NEED, WE WOULD ONCE BE THAT "GREAT NATION AGAIN". DO NOT LOOSE THE VALUES YOU WERE RAISED WITH, WE NEED SOMETHING TO BELEIVE IN THESE DAY'S. AFTER READING YOUR POST, IT SHOWED ME YOU ARE THAT CARING PERSON JUST LIKE ME. wE ALL NEED ONE ANOTHER.

I hope this is just a tragic accident ... but it might not be. People are feeling the tension, and many will have a difficult time coping. I hope the bankers on Wall St. and our elected officials look at this closely and see why exactly why the stakes are so high. My deepest condolences to the family.
