GOP Senate candidate Angle avoids press at own event

Page Last Updated: Wednesday July 21, 2010 10:03pm PDT
U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle invited local media to attend a press event in Reno Wednesday morning, but when members of the media tried to ask the candidate questions she didn't answer.

At the event this morning Angle signed a pledge to repeal the estate tax-or "death tax"- if she's elected, made a few brief statements and walked away with several members of the local media in tow.

News 4 Reporter Karen Griffin was one of the reporters trying to ask Angle questions and she actually ignored the questions, looked straight ahead and kept walking.

News 4 arrived at this morning's event early to make sure we could talk with Angle. News 4 listened to the press conference and when it ended, Angle simply walked away.

One of the questions was a request for a response to Rep. Dean Heller's, R-Nev., comment that he made the night before on a political talk show about her comments about the unemployed.

Following this morning's event, Reporter Karen Griffin contacted University of Nevada, Reno Political Science Professor Eric Herzik to see if there's any benefit for a candidate avoiding the media as Sharron Angle has. Here's what he had to say:

"This is part of the skill of the candidate. If you're given a question you don't like, answer the question you want to answer. Turn the question around. And she's not doing that. Turning her back and walking away from a camera is a pretty damning visual image for a candidate."

To be fair News 4 emailed Angle's campaign following the press event to see if she would answer the question we asked, and to see where she had to be after the event. News 4 has not heard from the Angle campaign.

News 4 received some negative feedback on this story; people asking why we were late to this event, and why we didn't ask our questions during the press event, and why this is a news story.
There were no opportunities for questions during the event, that's why we asked for Angle to answer questions as soon as the event ended.

As for why this is a news story; it's highly unusual for a candidate for major office to regularly avoid the media as Angle has done and not even take one or two questions.

The press serves as the conduit between the public and the candidate and its the media's job to ask these questions on behalf of the public.

If you have any questions you would like to ask any candidate, please send them to kgriffin@mynews4.com.

I'm not a supporter of candidate Angle and I have to say that's pretty weak. Are you suggesting that because there was "no comment" she snubbed you?

How weird. Considering how close the race is, and considering what's at stake how could you miss this opportunity? 3 camera crews chasing you and you don't have 30 seconds to say something clever? This was the best footage that could be obtained? What kind of press conference was this? I hope they at least provided some appetizers or refreshments for the crews. What a wasted opportunity to share platform and show your not "one of those kind" of politicians. This is a important story because it shows a very cliche side to politics. Sharon "cut and run" Angle who is too busy for the free press? Even 15 seconds is too much to ask I suppose. Our elected officials are busy people after all.

I'm curious why you didn't ask the question during the press conference but instead waited to chaise her out of the building? Could you not get there on time? This is hardly news worthy. It looks like you are trying to create controversy.

If you want controversy, why don't you ask Harry Reid about the trillions of dollars taken from social security and medicare during his term? Or the massive debt they continue to collect when the economy suffers so. Ask him why he isn't a defender of the Constitution or of Nevada. Seems to me that if you were truely a news outlet that some of these issues would get equal time.

Wow what a waste of time. This follows a biased story on the senate poll conducted by a democrat group. Wonder who at Channel 4 is in Harry's pocket? Let's not forget the real issues, like the 14% unemployment in Nevada.

Nice try, channel 4. You are trying to create news here. This wasn't a press conference, just another ambush. Why do you never chase Harry Reid? We know the answer.

Really, you are a news station, or is this just another great example of yellow journalism. My comment has nothing to do with Sharon Angle, but more to do with the state of journalism. What happen to just reporting, instead of creating news and influencing public opinion? What happen to simply the who, what, when, where and why of real events! Unbelievable non story, congratulations!

@Lee A. : Just a thought, but perhaps they never chase Harry Reid because he has the backbone to answer unscripted questions posed to him by the press.

@Marilyn B. : A candidate unwilling and/or unable to answer basic questions posed to them by any source IS news. If she can't field questions from a handful of reporters, how is she going to be able to handle representing Nevada on a national level?

JohnG., I too am curious why she didn't ask the question during the conference but instead waited to chaise her down? I think it is news worthy that this channel woild try to create controversy.
We have to ask ourselves this. Do we want more of slick and slimy, corrupt and coniving, over funded career politicians? Especially her opponent who has done so much harm, or do we choose to give someone not quite so slick (or slimy) a chance as a Freshman Senator who will in no way be able to act on her own? We might also want to look into just why the good 'ol boys in Nevada aren't backing her? Could be we will find that she is not easily swayed. The worst thing that could happen by backing her is that we will need to vote someone else in next election. Meanwhile, we have someone other than Reid. I suspect we will be very pleased with outcomes if we choose Angle and I support her not being used by rude and bought reporters.

Harry Reid has been asked every question under the sun, many times. Angle is new as a candidate for such a major office and as such there are many questions she has not answered. Most candidates relish the thought of "earned media". It is Angle's choice whether she wants to talk to the news or not, but when she continmually refuses, it is a real news story. However, no rational person can help but wonder what she is afraid of? She has had no lack of time to talk to friendly forums who will not ask her an uncomfortable question, but do we want a Senator who cannot stand up for herself and answer questions about where she stands on issues? It is always the second or third question that exposes the weakness of a candidate's position. Anybody can make a statement, but can it stand the test of examination of bases and consequences. Apparently Angle is unwilling to answer that type of question. Why is that? Could it be that her positions do not stand up to scrutiny.

There is much bias on this comments page. Whether Democrat or Republican, whether a candidate for President or City Council, we are entitled to responses to questions. If Reid were doing the same, it would be a major story. Since her nomination, she has refused to answer most questions and has tried to walk back her previous statements. Aren't we entitled to the truth? Portraying this as a partisan attack ignores the very real fact that she is not allowing the press - and by extension, us - to know what she thinks. I'm not clear as to why so many writers think it better for her to remain a cipher.

You need to understand that in the hermetically-sealed, right-wing echo chamber, the "press' is every bit as demonized as the Democratic opposition - a bunch of over-educated, patronizing, brie-and-chardonnay elitists who have the unmitigated temerity to think that a politician should actually have to, you know, answer questions about stuff. Like, what's your position on unemployment, or immigration, or Afghanistan, or health care? It's all just part of the liberal/socialist/fascist/communist conspiracy to make people like Sharron Angle look like they don't know what they are talking about. It happens to Sister Sarah Palin all the time, which is why the former candidate for Vice-President of the United States and presumptive front-runner for her party's nomination to be President still hasn't had a single, solitary press conference since her nomination in 2008. Not one. Instead, we get carefully scripted, choreographed "appearances" on Faux News.

Frauds, both of them.

Regardless of your political beliefs, no one should find it acceptable for a candidate or elected official to refuse to answer questions from the press. If the specific questions are unfair, you, the news consumer, can make that judgment. Without a dialogue with the press, the candidate can create an unchallenged narrative. Sarah Palin never held a press conference as a VP candidate. This was unprecedented, and should have be condemned more as unacceptable. It's not just Harry Reid who answers unscripted questions. Every member of the Senate of every ideology is capable of doing this and does do this regularly. If you are celebrating Angle for ignoring the press, do you think all public officials ought to be allowed to hide, too? Police departments? District attorneys? Local government leaders? If you don't trust the entire body of the press, that's your prerogative. They perform a vital function for many of us. Sharron Angle insults us all by turning her back.

Since you are so obvious in your bias against Angle it's no wonder she doesn't want to talk to you. I wouldn't either. Your loss of any honesty has lost you this viewer. Wow, so now according to the rules of the Tea Party in Nevada, GOP candidates no longer need to answer questions. It is amazing that you people have no issues with a candidate ducking every question.

As for bias, the only bias I can see is this article is a very right-wing bias. Several times the newscasts talks about a 'Death-tax' and not an 'Estate Tax'.
You people are so closed minded that you can not even see where the bias really exists.
It is downright terrifying and a good indicator that Nevada seems to be where Democracy goes to die.

I have an idea. If you want the question asked so bad why don't you give her a call? Don't sit on your butts waiting for News 4 to ask it for you.

As for me, I've had 24 years of Reid. Time to get some new representation in the Senate.

It's utterly irresponsible for the station's reporter and anchor to refer to estate taxes as "death taxes." A reputable news organization does NOT adopt the talking points of a political party or ideology.

Inherited money and property are INCOME, plain and simple, and the argument that it's "already been taxed" is self-serving and doesn't wash. Workers who collect a salary each week are not exempt from paying income taxes because their employer was already taxed on the money the workers are then paid.

Politicians like Angle are no more or less than swindlers whose ultimate goal is to accelerate the redistribution of the nation's wealth from those who have less into the pockets of those who already have more -- much more.

The ill-informed, ill-trained and, apparently, biased employees of KRNV4 should not be abetting this swindle.

Biased? I haven't been following this race, but what I have been following is the absolutely insane citizens of Nevada pretending that they only have one way to think and that is by their party lines. My father was a Republican his whole life and after losing his mining job during a Republican term started realizing that Republicans and Democrats have nothing to do with intelligence. Harry Reid might be the so called in house expert, but that doesn't excuse him from the record unemployment Nevada has under HIS terms. Sharon Angle can't even talk to the public, but either could George Bush Jr. I am always mystified how bloggers fail to miss that the point of the news is to inform. Sure there are bias views, but showing Sharon Angle walking away from a press conference is hardly being biased. I'm voting for whoever else is running, not these two idiots. Nothing is getting done around here and THAT is what is important, not party guidelines. Wake up Nevada. This ship is sinking fast.

HOW DARE YOU sit there and say Angle avoided Channel 4? What about when Channel 4 AVOIDS Angle?

This WAS NOT her first appearance since the primary - and YOU WERE INVITED TO SHOW UP - BUT YOU DID NOT!

Sparks Republican Women hosted Sharron Angle on July 14th. Many television stations, newspapers, and radio outlets were invited. ONLY Channel 2 in Reno showed up.

Coverage here: http://www.ktvn.com/global/video/flash/popupplayer.asp?ClipID1=4946217&h1=7/14%20-%2011pm%20-%20Sharron%20Angle%20at%20Republican%20Women%27s%20Monthly%20Dinner&vt1=v&at1=News&d1=54167&LaunchPageAdTag=News&activePane=info&rnd=27905256

Terri, you asked why the press didn't ask the questions during the press conference instead of chasing her down?

Here's the problem with that contention of yours. She didn't take any questions during the press conference. She made her statement, engaged in her little bit of political theater with that novelty pledge and then immediatedly turned and ran. At no time did she take any questions and if you bothered to watch the video its rather clear that she didn't.

So once again we have a Republican treating the American people as stupid idiots.

Did Sharron Angle know that.....
In 1998 Harry asked Jim Rogers, founder of Sunbelt Communications to "give a substantial amount of money to the Democratic Party." In a broadcast editorial on KVBC-TV/Las Vegas and KRNV-TV/Reno, Rogers told America that he told his friend, "Harry, I’m not only going to give you what you asked for, I’m going to give you twice the amount ...."

I'm thinking that Sharron knew enough to avoid the Harry trap!
