Page Last Updated: Tuesday July 27, 2010 6:11am PDT
Nic Dunn MyNews4.com (Reno, NV) - The Reno-Stead Airport will now be able to aid in fighting fires. A Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority press release reports that the Stead Airport has been turned into a hub for firefighting activity. With numerous wildfires in the region, the Stead Airport will be a key vase in fighting the blazes.

There are now more than 21 aircraft equipped to fight fires based at Stead. The control tower, which only operated during air races, is being activated to handle the aircraft taking off and landing quickly to take on fire retardant.

In addition to the aircraft, smoke jumpers and other ground personnel will help fight fires out of Stead.
