AZ law fuels Hispanic voter drive in Nevada

RENO, Nev. (AP) -- Social justice advocates in northern Nevada are trying to capitalize on publicity over Arizona's controversial immigration law by launching a voter registration drive in Reno's Hispanic neighborhoods.

The Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada and the Common Roots Collaborative are backing the campaign called "Tu Voto Cuenta: Your Vote Counts!" In addition to signing up new voters, they hope to organize opposition to any Arizona-like proposals that surface in Nevada's Legislature next year.

PLAN volunteer Elvira Diaz says the battle in Arizona has served to help wake a "sleeping giant" in many Hispanic communities. She says the voter registration push in Reno will help "build power, one neighborhood at a time."
