Everything helps: Charities looking for donations
Page Last Updated: Saturday November 14, 2009 11:27am PST
The holidays are upon us again, and local charities are asking for help from the community to provide for those less fortunate.
But if your wallet is a little lighter this year, there are still plenty of ways you can help.
"We need volunteers, and it doesn't cost anything except your time," said Carole Miller, public information officer for The Salvation Army. "To us, that's valuable. Volunteers are so important, and it takes a lot of people to sign up folks for applications, and take a lot to distribute food and toys, which we do just before Christmas."
Miller says The Salvation Army received 15,000 requests for help last year, and expects even more this year.
Many organizations that distribute food and toys say your donations don't have to be costly. A couple of cans of food, or an inexpensive puzzle or game for a child can make the difference for someone in need.
Other organizations are also collecting donations during the holidays:
Toys for Tots is asking for new, unwrapped toys like games, books and puzzles for children of all ages. The Nevada Humane Society needs food for dogs and cats, leashes, beds, collars and blankets. Children who are being cared for in the foster system under Child Protective Services can also use new clothing, new (unwrapped) toys and financial donations. CPS can be reached at (775) 337-4470. The SPCA needs animal food-both wet and dry-beds, toys, collars and leashes, as well as cleaning supplies like bleach, window cleaner and trash bags.
