Man sent to hospital after showing gun in Reno parking lot

Page Last Updated: Saturday November 14, 2009 12:00am PST
Authorities say a man called suicidal by Reno police was taken to the hospital Saturday night after he allegedly showed a firearm in a parking lot. The 46-year-old man got out of his vehicle with a loaded gun in the Medical Examiners Office at 10 Kirman Avenue, police said. When police arrived and attempted to make contact, he raised his gun, police said.

A Reno police officer shot the man with a "40mm less-lethal weapon," to fire a high density foam round into the man's stomach area, police said.

Officials say that because he was hit with the non-lethal round, the man fired one bullet from his gun. Another officer fired a bullet from a rifle, but it missed the man, police said.

Police say the man left paperwork in his vehicle with his next of kin, burial instructions and a will.

Emergency workers took the man to a Reno hospital with non-life threatening injury from the projectile. Police said the man will be mentally evaluated for his alleged suicide attempt. No one else was injured, they said.

Those with information regarding this case can call Reno Police Department, or Secret Witness at 322-4900.
