Power provider, state provides energy saving services

As the fall draws to a close some northern Nevadans are realizing their winter power bills may end up being higher than expected.

So what can you do to lower your bills and keep more money in your pocketbook?

News 4 found some simple fixes and ways some people may be able to get assistance.

Jim Wilcher and his family moved into their south Reno home last year. His home is new, but his power bills didn't seem to reflect energy efficiency.

"We started to experience some of our summer bills that were getting up there," Wilcher said. $500 a month or so.... So that was a good incentive to call."

On Monday NV Energy conducted a home energy audit of the Wilcher house giving Jim tips on everything from keeping blinds open during winter days to capture the sun's heat, to checking his air filters appliances hot water heater and his furnace.

"Definitely the thermostat, the programmable thermostat," Wilcher said. "Using that is going to make a big difference I think."

NV Energy conducts the audits free of charge, but it is up to homeowners like Jim to make the changes needed to lower their bills.

Customers who meet income qualifications can apply for the state's home weatherization program that allows them to receive free weatherization assistance.

The energy provider provides other programs as well.

"We have a program that 's administered by NV Energy that's called SAFE and it's assistance for customers that are having trouble paying their bills, it's not income based," said Bruce Bullock of NV Energy.

You can log onto the utility's website at www.nvenergy.com for additional information.

There are different programs available, both through the state and NV Energy for different needs and income levels.
