Reno to help local businesses "Recover"

The city of Reno decided Wednesday to help struggling local businesses survive during this recession.

The city council approved a program called "Recover," which has four components.

The first is modifying fee collection dates related to business permits.
The second is training with the Nevada Small Business Development Center.
The third component is funding: The city would help small businesses work with local banks to extend terms and lower rates.
The fourth is business attraction and retention.

"As everybody knows it's a very difficult economy right now, and we tried to identify things that we thought would help small businesses survive as well as stimulate them," said John Hester
Community Development Director. "Sort of what we could do for them locally."

This four pronged program is also being used in Santa Cruz, California.
