Area charities need food donations

Local charities say their food donations are holding steady, but the number of people in need of help is climbing-fast.
"In an average month, we feed about 9,000 people," said Peter Vogel, executive director of Catholic Community Services. "This month, we will feed 12,000."
Two-thirds of people who are at the poverty level are working, but are unable to make ends meet financially. So local agencies like The Salvation Army and Catholic Community Services are able to fill in the gaps and help keep people fed by filling food boxes with non-perishable items like peanut butter, pasta, beans, rice and canned fruits and vegetables.
Donations are always needed, and one Reno man says his family is happy to take part in that effort. Marty Brooks and his grandchildren, Emma and Nathan, delivered more than four dozen turkeys to local agencies as part of what the family calls "The Turkey Brigade."
"We used to do this when the kids were younger," Brooks said, "and now we involve our grandchildren because we think it's a great thing for them to learn."
