Thanksgiving travel forecast: fewer flights, passengers flying off-peak days
Page Last Updated: Wednesday November 25, 2009 12:57pm PST
According to Triple A, the number of travelers flying for Thanksgiving 2009 is down compared to last year.
At the Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RTIA), officials say there has been a steady flow of passengers over the past four days. They say with the checked luggage and security checkpoints comes a new vacation trend.
"We're seeing a lot more people now traveling on Sunday and Monday before Thanksgiving," explains Brian Kulpin, RTIA Director of Marketing. "They're taking the week and returning Sunday night after Thanksgiving. Maybe they're trying to maximize their trip, making it an entire week rather than just a few days like they used to."
Sisters Amanda and Kayla Fabbi are two such passengers.
"We're having a family reunion (in Las Vegas), and so we're going to visit all of my aunts, uncles and cousins," Amanda Fabbi said.
Her sister, Kayla Fabbi, says after the long year, they're ready to see family.
"Seeing my grandparents cause they live in California, it will be nice," Kayla Fabbi said.
Kulpin says they have two main travel waves, usually between 4 a.m and 6 a.m. and again, at noon. But during this holiday kick-off, he cautions travelers to keep some key points in mind.
- Visit your airlines' Web site, as many flights are charging additional surcharges on top of original tickets prices.
- Unless you're flying Southwest, be aware of the extra costs associated with more than one checked bag.
- Do not wrap any packages before flying out, as TSA will open wrapped bags within checked and carry-on luggage.
- Some airlines require passengers check their bags by a certain time before boarding. If this window crosses, passengers may not be allowed to board their plane.
