Upstairs apt destroyed in structure fire on Mt. Rose Hwy

About a dozen emergency crews responded to a structure fire at Sky Tavern Lodge on the Mount Rose Highway Saturday morning, officials said.

The blaze destroyed an upstairs apartment at the structure, according to Sierra Fire Protection District Chief Michael Greene.

Fire crews were slow to respond to the fire because of icy road conditions on State Route 431-Mt. Rose Hwy. Firefighters also had to bring a watertender up the hill because there were no available fire hydrants at the scene.

Residents of the attached caretaker's apartment were home at the time and were able to evacuate unharmed. The lodge did sustain some smoke damage.
