Cyber shopping on the rise
Page Last Updated: Tuesday December 1, 2009 2:14pm PST
Just days after millions of shoppers mobbed the malls on Black Friday, millions more jammed the Internet on Cyber Monday, searching for more holiday deals.
Nationwide, some 68 million people shopped from computers during their work time, and statistics showed online sales are up 20 percent this year.
But experts have some advice for online shoppers, especially when it comes to using their credit cards.
"Be careful of pop-up windows," said Sparks Police Sgt. Greta Woyciehowski. "And type in the full address of the site where you want to shop. If you type only a partial address, you could get one of those copycat sites, which looks similar to the national shopping chains."
Sgt. Woyciehowski also recommended that shoppers use just one credit card for all online shopping, and monitor statements carefully for any sign of unauthorized use or identity theft. Copy all information from charge cards, including account numbers and phone numbers, and keep the information in a safe place in case the cards are stolen.
