Crews investigate Reno house fire

Page Last Updated: Tuesday December 1, 2009 2:13pm PST
Reno investigators are still trying to figure out what started a house fire in Caughlin Ranch Monday night.

It began at about 9 p.m. on Ramcreek Trail and when crews arrived they say the garage was completely engulfed in flames.

Firefighters were able to save the remainder of the home.

Reno's fire battalion chief said the couple that lives at the home is out of town, and so far has not been notified.

Although a cause hasn't been determined, authorities say fires are common during the holidays, and this should act as a reminder to be extra cautious.

"It's Christmas season," said Reno Fire Department Battalion Chief Rik Kajans. WWe have a lot of other electrical things going on with Christmas trees and Christmas lights. It's very very important to have a smoke detector in the house so you get an early warning. And be extremely careful of electrical items at Christmas time."

The damage is not yet known, but Kajans said it is "fairly significant."
