Holiday Lights |
Area residents are being urged to do all they can to prevent accidental fires this holiday season.
"Home Christmas decorations can bring the holiday season to life," said Joan Presley, fire marshal for the City of Reno, "but they can also increase the chance of a fire occurring and spreading rapidly."
Presley issued the following advice to residents who are decorating their homes and businesses for the holidays:
--Natural Christmas trees should be watered daily. Dry trees can pose a serious fire hazard.
--Trees should not be placed near any heating source, including heating vents, space heaters or fireplaces.
--Inspect indoor and outdoor holiday lights for frayed wires, bare spots, gaps in insulation and broken or cracked sockets.
--Do not link more than three light strands unless directions indicate that it is safe.
--Do not leave holiday lights on unattended.
--Use only non-flammable or flame-retardant decorations, and make sure they are placed well away from heating vents.
--Do not burn wrapping paper in the fireplace or woodstove.
