As the Reno area faces near-zero temperatures over the next several days, Reno Fire officials are warning residents to be careful as they try to shield water pipes from the cold.
"Heat tape can be a useful tool," said Fire Marshal Joan Presley, "but proper installation and use are essential for preventing heat-related fires."
Residents who plan to use heat tape devices should purchase only those products that have been listed with a nationally-recognized testing laboratory. "Make sure that the heat tape product you purchase is intended for use on water pipes, since there are a number of products that are specifically designed for roof gutters and even garden soil, among other applications," said Presley.
For more information, call the Reno Fire Department at (775) 334-2300.
