The Salvation Army: "Critical Need for Christmas Food"
Page Last Updated: Thursday December 10, 2009 4:17pm PST
With fewer donations and greater demand, the Salvation Army says it is in "critical need of more donations."
In a release sent to News 4, the charity says it is $56,000 short of meeting its holiday goals. Currently, more than 3,000 families and seniors are on the 2009 Christmas list for turkeys and food boxes. Carole Miller with The Salvation Army says certain factors have fueled the shortage including fewer stores allowing food collection barrels, fewer overall donations and having no food reserves to start with this past year. Donations from the organization's annual Operation Turkey Drop left a $12,000 shortfall. For food boxes, that amount equals a $44,000 shortfall.
"We will provide Christmas turkeys and food for the folks who've registered for assistance, "said Major Doug Williams, Corps Officer for Reno. "We just don't know where we'll get the money to pay for it."
