Salvation Army hands out food, toys
Page Last Updated: Friday December 18, 2009 8:34am PST
The Reno Salvation Army spent the day Thursday handing out hundreds of food boxes and thousands of toys to area families who might otherwise not have food on the table or toys for their children this holiday season.
And this year's donation gathering was a struggle.
"We can't give as many presents as we normally do this year," said Carole Miller of the Salvation Army. "They will get one main gift, some stocking stuffers, and maybe a game or something for the family. So there are fewer gifts than last year, but everyone will get something."
Alesha Aleman usually donates to such causes, but because she and her husband are now unemployed, they stood in line to receive donations themselves this year.
"It's hard when you're usually the one who's giving, and now you're receiving," she said. "But we are grateful for these programs. Without them, I don't know what we'd do."
Keni Crosier stood in line with her daughter and 4-month-old granddaughter, and said she and her neighbors are working together to get by in tough times.
"We scrape each others' sidewalks and make sure the kids get to school," she said.
"We don't have much, but the things we have, we share."
