Bi-Partisanship Gets Benched When Democrats, Republicans Meet on the Court in Biennial Hoops Battle
Proceeds Support Foster Grandparent Program of Northern Nevada
Can Republicans go left? Can Democrats go right to the hoop? Those are two questions to be answered when elected officials of both parties meet for the Biennial Donkeys/Elephants Basketball Classic benefiting the Foster Grandparent Program of the Elvirita Lewis Foundation. The game pits elected Republican and Democrat officeholders against each other and features prominent basketball players from Nevada. Tip-off is Saturday, March 2 at 9:30 a.m. at the Lawlor Events Center, 1500 N. Virginia Street.
The Secretary of State organizes the game traditionally played during the legislative session. Secretary of State Ross Miller is playing on the Democrat team. Both teams include constitutional officers, legislators, local elected officials, and two ringers. Courtside play-by-play and color commentary will be provided by noted basketball aficionado and observer of partisan behavior, Jon Ralston.
A portion of ticket proceeds from the Basketball Classic will be donated to the Foster Grandparent Program of the Elvirita Lewis Foundation, an organization that helps maintain the dignity and productivity of the senior citizens. The Foster Grandparent Program places senior volunteers, 55 years and older, in supervised settings within K-12 schools, public agencies, family drug court, juvenile detention, etc. to help at-risk children meet academic standards, and provide positive intergenerational social interaction.
Doors to the South Main entrance on the ground level open at 9 a.m. Parking is available in the Brian Whelan Garage on North Virginia Street, south of the arena.
A post-game reception follows the Donkey/Elephant Basketball Classic at Little Waldorf Saloon, 1661 N. Virginia St., from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Then, return to the Lawlor Events Center to watch the Nevada Wolf Pack men’s basketball as they go head to head against the UNLV Rebels. Tickets are available at the UNR box office or online at www.mynevadatickets.com.
